Blythburgh Estuary

© Blythburgh 1999

Technically the Blyth Estuary begins at the sluice at Blyford, however it really widens out to form extensive mud flats below Blythburgh. This photograph taken from the Walberswick road looks across the river to Bulcamp. Several attempts were made to make the river navigable and during the last century barges travelled up the navigation as far as Halesworth. The route of the old river can still be seen although the water is no longer restrained by the old banks!
