Over the centuries the course of the river has changed several times, the mouth has moved from Dunwich to Southwold and the creation of the Blyth Navigation between Halesworth and the sea straightened out the lower reaches. In fact the point at which the river met the sea was a source of intense rivalry between the men of Southwold, Dunwich and Walberswick.
