Director Robert Siodmak, 1946, USA, 105 mins, with Ava Gardner, Burt Lancaster, Edmond O’Brian, Albert Dekker.
With Burt Lancaster playing his first screen roll opposite a smouldering but little known Ava Gardner, this will delight our growing audience of film noir addicts. The visual influence of Edward Hopper reflects the painter’s admiration for the original Hemingway story on which the film is based. The investigating detective, the perfect robbery gone wrong, the femme fatale whose presence is - well - fatal all add up to a film that influenced directors for many years to come.
