SUFFOLK HERRING FESTIVAL 2017

Venue: The Cut Arts Centre, Halesworth IP19 8BY link
Taking place on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th October. October is the time of year when the shoals of herring arrived on the east coast followed by the fishing fleet, which packed the east coast ports. This vast industry may now be a distant memory but herring is still good for you and it's place in our heritage – and on our dinner plates – should not be forgotten. That's why the Herring Festival, established by Jack Rosenthal in 2009, returns to The Cut this autumn celebrating this humble fish through food, drink, music, theatre and art. Entertainment, with a rich east coast flavour, includes the Wonderful Beast's Return of the Wildman, which retells the tale of Suffolk's most enchanting legends, and the John Ward Trio who give a modern east coast edge to the folk tradition, plus short talks and a wonderful Herring Barbeque.

Wonderful Beast presents - RETURN OF THE WILD MAN

Venue: The Cut Arts Centre, Halesworth IP19 8BY link
By Thea Smiley. Part of today's Herring Festival. For adults and those aged 10+.
Who was this Wildman? Devil, merman, sea spirit? The legend of Orford says he was captured at sea and incarcerated in the Castle where he was hung upside down in an attempt to make him speak. Not only would he not oblige but to the horror of the towns people he showed no respect for Christianity when taken to Orford Church. After six months he finally escaped and found his way back to the sea and disappeared for ever. Or did he? In this tale the Wildman’s presence is still very much alive… Performed by actor Martin Bonger, with music by Sylvia Hallett, featuring the Wonderful Beast Singers and directed by Alys Kihl.
Ticket Details: Ticket price - Standard £5.00.
