Director Theodore Malfi, 2016, USA, 127 mins with Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, Kevin Costner. Yet another example of the previously unacknowledged role of women in recent history. Katherine Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson are three brilliant black mathematicians whose brain power put John Glenn into orbit. Their story, though tainted with racism and misogyny, is uplifting, full of feisty exuberance and wit.

George Longford just wants a quiet life. He likes nothing better than an evening at home with his books, communicating by virtue of cutting-edge 1950’s technology with his friend in the flat upstairs. One evening, he is visited by Cyrus Armstrong whose urbane manner barely conceals a powerful menace. Accusing George of harming his sister, Cyrus threatens extreme physical pain. It is only the arrival of Cyrus’ mother which saves George. She cannot be more apologetic but the only way to be really safe is to get Cyrus far, far away…....
