Director Aisling Walsh, 2016, CANADA, 116 mins, with Sally Hawkins, Ethan Hawkes, Kari Matchett, Gabrielle Rose.
All the critics agree that Sally Hawkins gives an extraordinary performance as Maud Lewis, a Canadian folk artist whose life was only made bearable by her creativity. Living in a tiny cabin with her abusive husband she covered every surface with jewel-like paintings until eventually news of her talent spread to the outside world. It's a touching portrayal of a remarkable woman but there is a sense that, despite her marriage being presented as difficult, this is nevertheless a rose tinted version of reality.
Ticket Details: Standard £5, Cinema members £4.
