An Illustrated Talk - PRINTS AS PROTEST

Venue: The Cut Arts Centre, Halesworth IP19 8BY link
With Fiona Fitzgerald. This talk relates to the British Museum Exhibition: Edvard Munch - Love and Angst. At the end of the 19th Century, three North Europeans outsiders - Van Gogh, Gauguin and Munch - placed a new emphasis on medium and its power to displace convention with raw connection. Fiona will discuss this shift from ‘pretty pictures’ in the context of burgeoning possibilities for travel and communication.

Director Wash Westmoreland, 2018, UK, 112 mins with Keira Knightley, Dominic West, Eleanor Tomlinson, Denise Gough.
Another film about a husband taking credit for his wife's writing, but this time it's true. When country girl Colette marries egotistical Henri Gauthier-Villars she is thrilled by their cosmopolitan life style in Paris. When it becomes clear that all is not well financially Henri recognizes that his new wife has a talent worthy of exploitation. For Colette the fight is on to claim recognition for her novels published under her husband's nom-de-plume.
