Director Karel Reisz, 1960, UK, 90 mins, with Albert Finney, Shirley Anne Field, Rachel Roberts, Hylda Baker.
Following the death of Albert Finney this seminal 1960 film seems a suitable tribute to an actor who was one of the first to portray working-class life in all its rawness. Arthur Seaton is a factory worker - young, good-looking and in a state of constant revolt against society. He spends his free time drinking, womanising and heading for trouble, his one aim being not to 'let the bastards grind you down'.
